Good financial advice starts with the person. Peter believes understanding what clients genuinely want from life should come before developing the financial strategy.
Over the course of this year, I’ve had the opportunity to interview a cross-section of financial advisers from First Financial. Several similarities have emerged, and they will make for a great article as we wrap up the year in a couple of months.
One characteristic that has surprised me is how these very smart, capable, and different types of people end up in the world of financial advice. Becoming a financial adviser in the modern era requires study, vetting, and a high degree of practical and emotional intelligence. As in Peter’s case, it is rarely a first-choice decision.
Peter is an example. He holds several qualifications across intersecting disciplines, including a Bachelor of Commerce, a Master’s in International Finance, an Advanced Diploma of Financial Planning, and a Master’s in Financial Planning. That’s a lot of number crunching and strategy analysis for an individual who started his career in sports management while dabbling in foreign exchange trading.
"Numbers without purpose are simply numbers."
Growing up in Bridgetown, Western Australia, Peter moved east to Melbourne, where his numerical ability caught the attention of a prominent figure in financial circles. Over time, a professional relationship developed and heartfelt conversations quietly changed the direction of a career.
Peter had considered the world of fund management. But after some sage advice and well-intentioned guidance, financial planning emerged as a better fit. It turned out to be a very good call.
“I was fortunate to meet a person who recognised my skills early, and with his guidance, I’ve been able to pull the right career levers at the right time. I take this learning into my work, knowing just how much of a difference considered, authentic advice can make.”
Peter commenced his finance career in 2012 and has built extensive experience in senior advisory roles and as a CFO, helping a start-up bring an innovative technology prototype to the international stage. It was these experiences, coupled with his mentor’s advice, that eventually saw Peter find his place in financial advice.
“I have a knack for numbers, and at the same time, I get a great sense of accomplishment and reward from helping individuals and couples make smarter decisions and understand the potential of their financial future. It is the reason I have such a passion for this profession. I’ve been very lucky to have had the opportunities I’ve had, and at this point in my career, First Financial is very much my long-term home.”
The primary attraction to First Financial’s advice model is the freedom to find the right solution for each client rather than trying to fit people into a predetermined box. It reflects something Peter strongly believes: good financial advice needs to start with the person.
For Peter, one of the most important lessons about money came not from a finance textbook or investment market, but from a trip to Sicily.
While visiting a small mountain community, he met people who had relatively little material wealth but appeared remarkably happy and content. It made an impression.
Peter began thinking differently about the conversations he was having with clients. Instead of focusing exclusively on targets, whether that was accumulating $2 million, $3 million or $5 million for retirement, the more important question became: what do you actually want your money to allow you to do?
The numbers still matter, of course. But numbers without purpose are simply numbers.
"The more important question is: what do you actually want your money to allow you to do?"
Peter believes authenticity has become increasingly important in financial advice. Interestingly, a large number of his clients originate from James Wrigley’s social media presence. While social media might seem an unusual place to begin a serious financial relationship, Peter believes its effectiveness comes down to something very traditional: trust.
“People respond to advisers who communicate naturally, acknowledge that life isn’t always perfect and are prepared to have genuine conversations.”
It’s an approach that fits comfortably with First Financial’s philosophy of understanding what matters to a client before building their financial roadmap.
Outside work, Peter has settled in Parkville with his partner. He remains loyal to his Western Australian roots as a West Coast Eagles supporter. It has been a tough watch since their 2018 premiership, but, like his work, he is persistent and always optimistic. He enjoys gaming and has travelled extensively around Australia, including a memorable caravan journey from Perth through Uluru and down to Victoria.
“I’ve seen my share of international destinations. Nowadays, exploring my own backyard in the caravan is what my partner and I really enjoy. Financial advice is a fast-paced industry. You become very involved in a client’s life journey. This is incredibly humbling and worthwhile, but I do love the open road and great expanses we have in this country as an opportunity to reset.”
Perhaps that appetite for experiences helps explain his philosophy as an adviser. Building wealth matters. Planning matters. Investing wisely matters.
But ultimately, Peter believes money should help you live well.
Often, the best financial advice begins with a very simple question: what would a good life actually look like for you?

Retired widow
Lyn stepped into financial management for the first time after her husband's passing. With patience and care, First Financial supported her through grief, learning, and empowerment.
“After my husband passed, I was completely unsure where to start. First Financial gave me the space to learn, to ask questions, to grow confident. They drew a diagram that I still have. And now, I sleep well at night knowing I’ve got someone in my corner.”
Early retirement and working professional
When Tim received an overseas medical settlement, he and Adam had just 14 days left in a 90-day window. They needed clear guidance, fast. A referral led them to First Financial.
“We’re in totally different life stages, but First Financial built a strategy that supports us both. From urgent legal steps to ethical investing, they handled every detail with calm, care, and real expertise. It’s financial freedom without compromise, and we couldn’t have done it without them.”
Retired
Jan's husband managed the finances until entering aged care. Jan gradually stepped into the financial picture with First Financial’s support.
“The money just comes in. I don’t have to think about it. And I know they’re always there. They’ve always been there in the background, just quietly making things work.”
Retired and semi-retired
Referred by friends who were helped through aged care, Craig sought secure financial guidance after inheriting funds.
“We feel very secure with First Financial, the income just comes in, and we know everything is being looked after. It’s not just safe, it’s smart. We’ve recommended them to others because we genuinely believe in the team.”
Newly retired
As retirement neared, Larry and Virginia were ready to enjoy travel, family, and freedom, without uncertainty. A friend recommended First Financial, and from the first meeting, they had a clear plan, a safety net, and people they trusted.
“We’ve travelled the world, Europe, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, without once stressing about the money. They made everything feel simple and gave us the confidence to live well. We feel secure because we know exactly where we stand, and that peace of mind means everything.”
Retired business owner
After decades of running a successful pharmacy, John sought financial guidance to simplify decision-making and support long-term planning.
“I feel genuinely supported by First Financial. I can ask anything, and there’s no pressure, just clear advice and real care. The money’s growing, I’m not stressed about it, and I feel completely at ease for the first time. I don’t miss work, but I’d miss the support I get from First Financial.”
Peter believes good financial advice starts with understanding the person, their priorities and what they want their money to help them achieve. From there, a financial strategy can be developed to support those goals.
Accumulating wealth is important, but Peter believes the numbers are more meaningful when they are connected to a desired lifestyle. Asking what you are actually saving and investing for can help shape clearer financial decisions.
Peter has worked in finance since 2012 and has experience across senior advisory and CFO roles. He also holds qualifications in commerce, international finance and financial planning.
Financial advice often involves important decisions about retirement, investments, family and lifestyle. Peter believes being authentic, communicating clearly and having genuine conversations can help build the trust required for a strong, long-term adviser relationship.
