Roadmap
A clear, personalised path to your financial goals.
It was back in the mid-nineties, when the Richmond Football Club’s old-time adversaries, Carlton, were dominating the AFL, albeit with some interesting salary cap practices, that Brad decided to make a career change from the law to financial planning.
Back then, the profession looked very different; it was a young industry finding its standards and defining its purpose.
Thirty years later, Brad has not only witnessed that evolution; he has lived it, shaped by the lessons of time, trust, and a belief in putting people first, which was the driving motivation behind his decision to switch careers all those years ago.
Ask Brad what’s changed most in three decades, and his answer is immediate: professionalism and education.
“Today’s advisers are entering the industry with strong academic foundations,” he says. “Most have at least an undergraduate degree in financial planning, and many hold an MBA. There’s extensive in-house training and ongoing professional development; it’s a far cry from the early days.”
He sees that as an overwhelmingly positive shift. Higher standards, he explains, have elevated the industry’s reputation and deepened client trust.
“It’s now a genuine profession with structure, accountability, and purpose. And the best part? The quality of people coming through, they’re motivated, well-educated, and genuinely care.”
Another transformation he’s proud to see is the rise of women in the field. “It’s one of the best things that’s happened to advice,” Brad says. “Diverse perspectives make us better. It’s changed the way we engage with clients and with each other.”
When it comes to defining what makes a quality adviser, Brad’s view blends technical mastery with deeply human skills.
“First, you have to know your stuff,” he says. “That’s non-negotiable. But beyond that, it’s about drive, commitment, and the ability to build real relationships.”
He believes that transparency is key, being honest about what’s possible and taking responsibility when things don’t go as planned.
“You need to work towards the best outcome for the client, always. It’s a serious business with serious outcomes, so you have to be a serious person. Care for your client, care for yourself, and care for the profession.”
Brad also emphasises the importance of collaboration. “Financial planning isn’t done in isolation. You work with accountants, investment specialists, insurance professionals, paraplanners and administration professionals. Success depends on how well you can manage relationships and lead teams.”
And above all, he says, “You need to be a great listener. That’s how you build trust. That’s how you make a difference.”
For Brad, the real reward isn’t in balance sheets or portfolios, it’s in moments of trust. “When a client asks you to be their children’s adviser, that’s the highest endorsement you can get,” he says with a smile. “It means they see you not just as a professional, but as part of their legacy”
Over the years, Brad has guided clients through retirements, market volatility, and personal milestones. He’s seen entire families grow up, transition wealth, and plan for the next generation. It’s demanding work, he admits, but deeply fulfilling.
“It’s a career that asks a lot of you, emotionally, intellectually, personally, but what you give, you get back tenfold.”
Today, as a Principal at First Financial, Brad embodies the firm’s values of respect, integrity, trust, and professionalism. His approach is refreshingly straightforward: “Be honest. Be accountable. Help clients see what’s possible.”
Clients describe him as steady, thoughtful, and reliable, the kind of adviser who’s there when it matters most. His long-term clients appreciate not only his technical expertise but also his consistency and composure in the face of life’s uncertainties.
Brad specialises in retirement and pre-retirement strategy, with a focus on tax-effective planning, wealth transition, and family outcomes. Yet he insists that money is just part of the story. “What really matters is helping people live with confidence, to support their families, make wise choices, and feel excited about what’s ahead.”
Outside work, Brad is a die-hard Tigers fan and lives in Richmond with his partner and their teenage twin boys. He makes time for old friends, good stories, and the kind of conversations that matter. The same values that have guided him for more than thirty years in a profession built on trust, care, and genuine connection.

Retired widow
Lyn stepped into financial management for the first time after her husband's passing. With patience and care, First Financial supported her through grief, learning, and empowerment.
“After my husband passed, I was completely unsure where to start. First Financial gave me the space to learn, to ask questions, to grow confident. They drew a diagram that I still have. And now, I sleep well at night knowing I’ve got someone in my corner.”
Early retirement and working professional
When Tim received an overseas medical settlement, he and Adam had just 14 days left in a 90-day window. They needed clear guidance, fast. A referral led them to First Financial.
“We’re in totally different life stages, but First Financial built a strategy that supports us both. From urgent legal steps to ethical investing, they handled every detail with calm, care, and real expertise. It’s financial freedom without compromise, and we couldn’t have done it without them.”
Retired
Jan's husband managed the finances until entering aged care. Jan gradually stepped into the financial picture with First Financial’s support.
“The money just comes in. I don’t have to think about it. And I know they’re always there. They’ve always been there in the background, just quietly making things work.”
Newly retired
As retirement neared, Larry and Virginia were ready to enjoy travel, family, and freedom, without uncertainty. A friend recommended First Financial, and from the first meeting, they had a clear plan, a safety net, and people they trusted.
“We’ve travelled the world, Europe, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, without once stressing about the money. They made everything feel simple and gave us the confidence to live well. We feel secure because we know exactly where we stand, and that peace of mind means everything.”
Retired business owner
After decades of running a successful pharmacy, John sought financial guidance to simplify decision-making and support long-term planning.
“I feel genuinely supported by First Financial. I can ask anything, and there’s no pressure, just clear advice and real care. The money’s growing, I’m not stressed about it, and I feel completely at ease for the first time. I don’t miss work, but I’d miss the support I get from First Financial.”
Retired and semi-retired
Referred by friends helped through aged care, Craig sought secure financial guidance after inheriting funds.
“We feel very secure with First Financial, the income just comes in, and we know everything is being looked after. It’s not just safe, it’s smart. We’ve recommended them to others because we genuinely believe in the team.”
