Aged Care

As we age, our living arrangements may need to change – sometimes quickly. Planning for aged care for yourself or a loved one can be a very stressful time. At First Financial we believe having a plan in place is essential to make this time as stress free as possible.

Aged care in Australia

At First Financial, we commit to forging a lifelong relationship with our clients – working with them through the inevitable life changes and milestones they will face.

Our suite of offerings includes aged care advisory services, and our aged care specialist advisers will take you through the process and provide a clear and effective solution for you, or your loved ones. There is a myriad of options for assisted living in the home as well as residential care. The rules are complex, and getting specialist and timely advice and guidance is critical.

Financial implications of moving into aged care

When the time comes to move a a loved one into aged care, you will need to complete an income and assets test to find out if there is an option to obtain government funding to assist with the care required.

For many , this will mean they do not have to pay the full cost of aged care accommodation, which can be a huge weight off their minds.

For some facing aged care expenses, selling off assets comes into question to pay for the costs of the aged care services.

In most circumstances, the family home is not counted as an asset in this income and assets test, but if you sold the family home and put the money in the bank, it would count.

Aged care costs for Australians

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, as at June 2022, over a million Australians were using residential aged care, home care or transition care in Australia.

The two major costs for residential aged care are the accommodation itself and the fees for care within this accommodation, depending on the level of care required.

The ways in which you can meet these costs come under two main categories:

  1. Refundable lump sum payment
  2. Rental-style daily payments

You can choose to pay a combination of the two, and the payment situation that suits you will be dependent on your individual circumstances and the level of care required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a financial adviser at First Financial actually do?

We look at your entire financial picture—income, assets, super, tax, investments and more—and provide structured advice that supports your lifestyle now and into the future. It’s not about one-off tips, but about building a plan that works for you long-term.

Do I have to be close to retirement to benefit from financial advice?

Not at all. We work with people across all life stages, from early career through to retirement and beyond. The earlier you start planning, the more options you’ll have—but it’s never too late to make informed decisions.

What if I don’t need every service you offer?

That’s completely fine. Your adviser will explain what’s relevant to your situation and ensure each element fits into a clear strategy. Having access to a full range of services in one place simply makes things easier when you need them.

What happens after the initial meeting?

Once we understand your goals and circumstances, we’ll develop a tailored strategy that outlines how we’re going to assist you in achieving your goals. If you choose to move forward, we’ll implement the plan and provide ongoing support through regular reviews.
