“Growing up, I was always interested in money and numbers… and I’ve always been very frugal in terms of saving my money. I enjoy seeing the progress and watching my wealth build.

Of course, it was on a much smaller scale than our clients, but I like the idea of assessing where you are now and looking at the tools you have available and then determining the best way to use them – what you can put in place today so that you can get where you want to be in the future. This is where financial planning helps a lot.”

Nathaniel Johnston joined the First Financial team as an Associate Adviser in April 2021. A chance meeting with one of our management team while he was celebrating a friend’s birthday led him down the interview path and through our doors.

“I was working for a large firm in more of a strategic role and even though I wasn’t actively looking to move, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have a chat with Chris and Gavin. I was very aware that I didn’t want to end up pigeon-holed within the strategic side of financial planning… so First Financial really was a great option for me.”

Client interaction and being involved in meetings are some of the key reasons Nathaniel is so happy at First Financial.

“My involvement with clients is the stand out part of my job. I’m pretty much the main point of contact, which is great for developing my soft skills. I like to think of myself as a people person. While I find financial planning and investment advice interesting, people are probably more interesting in the long run. I like dealing with people, getting to know them, learning about their stories – that’s been really nice compared to my previous role.

And the office has a table tennis table… which I really enjoy playing on!”

Besides table tennis matches against colleagues during lunch, Nathaniel also enjoys playing basketball and after a few years of no games, he can’t wait to get back on the court in 2022. Plus, he’s recently picked up golf.

“I never thought I would do it but working inside all the time, I just started so that I could be outside, enjoy good weather and catch up with mates.”
